East Of Eden Part I

Love And Hate

Two words that are the opposite of each other. In story, East of Eden, the portrayal of love and hate is shown. We have hear Adam and Charles showing whether they hate or love their dead father. In chapter 7 page 64 Charles asked his brother does he love his their father. Adam respond with that he does not. He also admits that sometimes his father scares him and sometimes he might love him or admire him. However most of the times he hated his father. On The other hand  Charles loved his father very much from what I have read from the story and what he has also admit to but as it is shown Cyrus, the father, loved Adam more which i found to be pretty ironic. In the story the author states that when you love someone you can sometimes doubt them. Which show that Charles really does love his father Cyrus because he doubt his father for all the money he left for them. He thinks to he thinks to himself how his father was able to make such money because of his father job couldn't make that much money. While Adam never doubted anything because he did not love his father. Showing how even though love and hate are opposite they are build from each other. You couldn't have hated without have loved and you couldn't have loved without hating.

Questions And response
7)Is Cathy Ames doomed by Nature to be who she is, or does she have a choice? Cathy is introduced as a monster in Chapter 8; in chapter 12 she's described slightly differently. Steinbeck seems to be assessing her character as he writes the book. Why might Steinbeck be asking the reader to assess Cathy carefully?
Cathy Ames is not doomed by Nature to be who she is. She has a choice to chance that is if she is willing to take that step however as the story progresses we see that she is staying the same not trying to restart her life. Steinbeck might be asking the reader to assess Cathy carefully because he himself probably does not know what kind of character that Cathy is turning to so he wants to closely watch and have a mindset of what we think of her.

8) How might Cathy Ames be an Eve-like figure? Or is she like Lilith, a demon created from filth, who, according to some Jewish myths, was Adam's first wife? What role does human sexuality play in the lives of the characters?
Cathy Ames is more like Lilith. I'm not calling her filth but the way she is portrayed
doesn't seem very pretty. It just shows that using sexuality we try to get things that way. It is a dirty method which is not very necessary. Cathy saw it as a way out because apparently since birth she was strange. Noticing that how she has develop has attracted guys she used it as a weapon. A weapon to get money from men which doesn't always turn out great. However she sees it as her only use cause it seems to work out for her in some ways. It is not a very stable life but she is corrupted in a way. So she would be like a demon which use effective methods to get what they want.
