East Of Eden Part III

 Change
The theme of part three was freedom. Reading this part of the story start to see a different side to it nothing is the same anymore. Freedom is shown through the pages in the chapters . Adam who was always under Cathy's control has finally slipped away. He has finally seen who she really is before him. He has realize he was but a fool in the past to not have seen this until now. With this new discovery he was free from the the hold she had on him and was able to regain his ambitions in life and become a good father towards his boys.

 2) Samuel, Adam, Cal, Dessie and Tom all lie to the feelings of others in Part Three. Is their deception justifiable as kindness, or is it ultimately a breach of trust? Compare their actions to that of Lee's father. note also Lee's advice to Adam about telling the boys the truth about Cathy.
There isn't really a way to explain if the deception of lying justified as a kindness, or ultimately a breach of trust for when you think of deception it is not something positive. Some lies are said out of kindness because you care about someone. However, according to that person when they found out about it and that you knew all along it would be an ultimately be a breach of trust. So, I believe it is best to say even if lying to them is your way of being kind you might be hurting them. It might ease the pain more if the truth was to be told directly from the person you have faith in. Therefore, making the person feel you are very trustworthy. On the other hand, if it is ultimately a breach of trust most people would forgive seeing you did it out of kindness to protect them.

7) What do you suppose Charles' motives were in equally dividing his inheritance between Adam and Cathy?
I think Charles' motives for equally diving his inheritance between Adam and Cathy was a way to pay for his sin. He has hurt his brother by sleeping with his new wife during their wedding night. He felt guilt as if he was the one to drive Adam away from home. Charles felt the only way he could of make up for is by giving his inheritance to Adam and his wife Cathy.

9) The scene when Adam first confronts Cathy is remarkable. Note how her body is described, her hands. How does Steinbeck convey Cathy's physical decline and Adam's response to to her?
Steinbeck's description of Cathy shows the sign of her aging. It shows that Cathy once beautiful use to manipulate others is no longer. Her true colors are now being shown now from her now present appearance. As for Adam, finally seeing her true image, her true shape has seen the light. he has seen that he was but a fool the whole time being deceived by this women described as monster before him. He starts seeing the truth and with that realization he was able to let her go from his mind finally being free.
